Jarett's Birth Story

We are very excited to announce the birth of Gerald Dwight Siers III, or Jarett, as we'll be calling him. I started having contractions pretty frequently on Tuesday June 1st, the day before I was scheduled for induction. I was so excited. These contractions were so convincing that I left work early and made Jeremy come home too. I was all ready to have this baby! Unfortunately after a couple of hours at home the contractions fizzled out. I tried getting them back with a walk around the block with no luck.

So induction it was, we headed to the hospital on Wednesday June 2nd at 6am. I was nervous, not knowing how things would go since I didn't get induced with Kaeden. I was scared of the ever-feared pitocin contractions. I requested that they just break my water first to get things going somewhat naturally. So at 0745 the doctor came in, I was still the same 3cm from the week before, but 90% effaced. She went ahead and broke my water which showed a light meconium stain. This worried me. The doctor said they'd have to rush him over to the warmer and get him suctioned BEFORE he took his first breath so for me not to expect to hear him cry immediately. Eek. I didn't like the sound of that.

Well contractions started coming regularly and getting stronger. By the time an hour was up I was really uncomfortable and ready for my epidural. So we got that going and started the pitocin at the same time. At this point I had dilated to 4cm. I was much more comfortable after the epidural but my blood pressure dropped and I was getting numb in my left arm and up my back. Made me feel really weird. After a rate adjustment and some extra fluids I was feeling better.

At 1100 the nurse came in to check me and to my surprise I was already 8cm... not much longer now. An hour later at around 1215 I was feeling alot of pressure so we called the nurse to let her know. She checked me... 10cm, ready to push. She had me give her a practice push and I guess it was a good one because she said she needed to call the doctor before we started, I would go pretty fast. At 1229 I started pushing and just thirteen minutes later at 1242 Jarett was born. The little stinker ended up taking his first breath before they could get him suctioned so he inhaled some of the meconium. They had to deep suction him and give him some oxygen. He was having a little trouble breathing at first. Given my background and the fact that I've had a baby before, I knew that the crying he was doing was not normal and I didn't like the sound of it. They worked on him for about 10 minutes before he was sounding better and had a good strong cry. Finally I felt relieved and assured that he was doing ok. Now they could finally get all his stats and let us hold him. He weighed in at 8 lbs 8 oz and 20.5 inches long. We couldn't believe how big he was! Kaeden was just shy of 7 lbs so it was a big difference.

So it was a quick and easy delivery, thank God, and our little man is every bit of perfect. Jeremy and I (and Kaeden too) are completely in love with him.

It just melts my heart to see Jeremy with him. This is a first for him and to know all the emotions he's going through just make my heart smile. :)

Of course all the grandparents were there along with new big brother Kaeden. Although I had been telling Kaed that the baby was coming that day, I'm not sure he quite knew what to expect when he came up there. He was a little unsure of things but totally in to his new brother.

Oh, and we have a thumb sucker! Although, he hasn't done this at home as much as he did in the hospital.

He is just perfect Allison. The picture of Jeremy holding him made me cry. What a wonderful moment. As for you, only you could make a hospital gown look good.
